Artist Statement 2007

Painting is for me a practice to be cultivated throughout life. Within the frame of my paintings a co-mingling occurs between a past lesson, a present situation, and an imagination of the future.

The initial blank canvas is never really empty. The memory of history, 17,000 years of image making seems somehow woven into the cotton duct canvas. Clichés are always already on the canvas and only when I attempt to leave them behind, through rejection can the work begin.

I am unquestionably obsessed with space and the complexity that it can contain. Within the space of a painting the imagination can live and breathe in a situation of dimensionality. This illusion is an opportunity to explore the mechanisms that create a dynamic place for the not yet seen to appear. Color becomes the primary vehicle for creating not only a fictive illuminated space but also an evocative image. The basic materiality of paint, its body, viscosity, texture and how it comes to rest on the canvas can become a locus for an experience of the actual.

We live in a time where language, images, and actions collide and transform one another continuously. This is the terrain of the sensible, a hyperactive world of surfaces and media distraction that occupies our daily space. Painting is a way to examine the very fabric of the sensible and a means to shake up our modes of perception. I strive to present an image that seeks an attitude, neither empathy nor withdrawal, but a confrontation with life.
